PREVENTING GENDER BASED VIOLENCE-THE ROLE OF MALES IN OUR SOCIETY

This year one of my goals as an online social justice advocate is to provide you with information you can use to bring about needed changes within your community.

MBEV has featured posts regarding the culture of violence against women during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence as well as recent posts on individual rape cases.

I want to share the role that males can be actively engaged in to help other males become educated and aware that violence against women hurts us and you as well.

In March of 2012 a video titled "Shit Men Say to Men Who Say Shit to Women on the Street" deals with the issue of street harassment.

This video was produced by Stop Street Harassment. This organization provides information on how males can be allies with women to help stop the violence.

Street Harassment is catcalls, sexually explicit comments, sexist remarks, groping leering, stalking, public masturbation and assault.
Most women (more than 80% worldwide) LBGQT folks will face gender based street harassment during some point in their lives.
Street Harassment limits people's mobility and access to public spaces.  It is a form of gender based violence and it's a human rights violation.  It needs to stop!

This definition is from Stop Street Harassment.org.

Stop Street Harassment has a nice selection of resources that you can use to educate and advocate for women and girls.

We have to work in collaboration to help reduce and end gender based violence.

Yeah and beyond all that, it just sounds stupid.

By the way, sometimes you ladies harrass us too in the street....sometimes it's embarrassing and sometimes it's pathetic too.
