2012 FROM MY BROWN EYED VIEW

Imagine what it would be like to live in an area where the level of poverty is extreme and there is no access to water or electricity.

Your government has not made a sincere effort to do anything that will help to improve the lives of the people and it appears that progress will be slow to arrive in your community.

Hands In The Mist is a short documentary film that does not totally focus on the extreme impoverished conditions in Cerro Verde, a 30,000 person slum 30 miles outside of Lima. But the extreme poverty is not the primary gist of this film.

This short documentary focuses on how design students took the time to discuss the concerns of the people and what type of innovations that they would like to see created for their community.

One of the innovative products that has been designed by students is a foot-powered washing machine know as GiraDora.

A simple machine that has the potential to change the lives of millions of people

There are two things that I like about this social innovation project.  The idea that the people must be the ones to help to create ways to improve their lives and the fact that this design concept is being pursued.

What an interesting post!
I have a rather negative opinion of the government attempts to help people. For example, a fellow asked for a job the other day. But, he was making more on unemployment that we could pay him. He couldn't take a job from us as it would ruin his benefits.
A foot powered washing machine provides a way to have clean clothes which are essential to self esteem and also to finding a job. (Of course there are other benefits to being clean)
I like to see simple solutions which help people help themselves-so to speak.
