DAY OF BLOGGING FOR JUSTICE: ON BEHALF OF THE SCOTT SISTERS

JAMIE AND GLADYS SCOTT
Today Am I Not Human? is blogging once again on behalf of Jamie and Gladys Scott. These two sistas are still being held captive by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, under the pretense that they committed a crime.

The struggle for freedom has never been quick. Nor has it been easily attained.  The Scott Sisters have been incarcerated for going on 16 years.  In spite of the fact that the evidence of their guilt has been refuted.  The extreme sentence of double life for a crime that they did not commit, is a grave injustice.  One that we won't back down on raising up to the world-wide community until they are released.

The real crime in the Scott Sisters case has not been committed by them. It rests with the officials in the legal system of Mississippi.  Their refusal to admit that they were wrong in their conviction of these two Black women.  Does the theft of $11.00 warrant a double life sentence?  This is an extreme sentence for a petty crime.  It is also inhumane when the alleged criminals did not commit the act.

As a society of rational thinking human beings, we have to question how many women and men are serving time with sentences that actually out weigh their criminal acts?  If this is supposed to be a society that balances out its system of justice-why are the Scott Sisters still imprisoned?

MBEV has featured information regarding the sisters plight since I first learned about their case.  Afrospear Bloggers have shared the responsibility for educating the on line community about this act of injustice.  Our results continue to meet with resistance from the MDOC.  But, that does not mean that we will give up and not support the release of The Scott Sisters.

Their supporters have grown in numbers.  The Gray Haired Witnesses for Justice held a fast and vigil in Washington D.C. to bring public awareness to the Scott Sisters and to the cases of other Black Women who are currently incarcerated in prisons across the United States. Nancy Lockhart continues to do battle within the legal system of the release of these two women.

We have reached the point where there is no backing down of our demands.  No one who engages in the struggle for freedom should ever operate on the notion that it will be a short-term action.  By any means necessary denotes that we exhaust all known methods and then come up with more to utilize.  We do not stop until our desired outcome and goals are reached.

There are many activist engaged in this cause. You can lend your support by visiting Free The Scott Sisters, The Gray Haired Witnesses, Wrongful Convictions, Change.org.

To our sistas who are held captive down in Mississippi say stay prayerful and strong.  God has not forgot about you, and neither have we.

On the 27th of each month a group of bloggers contribute post to the Am I Not Human? Campaign. You can visit the site to learn more about the issues and how you can make contribtions on the subject of Human Rights.
