I just finished reading a great article on the NPR site. "No Batteries Required" details how board games are becoming popular again. Which is a good thing in my mind. We still play board games and cards at family gatherings. My sons are hardcore Monopoly players. The last time that they played I received several phone calls during the game to verify rules, to listen to smack talk and how it sucked to be in debt and broke.
I admit that I am seriously working on obtaining a Wii. I think that it is going to be fun to play in the privacy of my home. I love tech toys and Wii is on my list of wants. But, I have never gotten totally away from board games. They are a part of our recreational lifestyle. We all have different game sets at our homes. My children learned that when there is no electricity available a board game is a great way to pass the time.
Board games are a great way to teach skills to children. They also provide much entertainment when the players are prone to talk trash while the dice are rolling and moves are being made. There is also the satisfaction of giving someone a non-violent beatdown that can be bragged about until the next game.
This trend proves what my elders always declared to be true. Hold onto certain things because in due time-they will come back in style.

Board games offer some great opportunities for families to form some memories (they do with mine). And I highly recommend getting a Wii. We had some great times with that, too. Thanks.
board games also forces one to think too not like computer games where the computer does your thinking for you.
As a mom I am ashamed to say that I do not know how to play Chess or even Checkers. I think I used to play Checkers with my sister when we were younger but now I haven't for many years.
I have never played monopoly or Backgammon..I am useless really.
You've inspired me to start playing.
other than the radio control truck, son's gifts were physical and mentally based. Ripstick, Bionicles, Legos, Hot Wheels tracks, basketball hoop, etc.
i really do need to unpack our board games. played monopoly and sorry many times as a kid.
Oh, baby! I used to be the Monopoly King! LMAO! I was cunning, calculating, and ruthless! Instead of breaking myself by buying expensive properties, I always started off small. One by one, I'd purchase nearly every small property on the board. Then I'd take the money earned from those properties to buy the more expensive ones! Funny, but no one ever seemed to catch on to my strategy. :-)
My two children used to talk trash to one another when they played chess together as children...I found the trash talking to be disturbing.
I love to play Scrabble online; and yet, I've never talked trash while playing Scrabble. Of course, it's Scrabble and only dorks play Scrabble, so maybe that's the answer to that.
