Praise God From Whom All Of Our Blessings Flow!
On this particular Sunday, I find myself being lead to share some of the thoughts that have run across my mind this week on the subject of Black people.
There is a question that has run across my thoughts lately. When did we loose our ability to love one another? I have not found an answer to this question. But I see the reasons why I feel the need to ask myself this over and over.
When I look at "my" people-I am often struck with how seperated we really are as a group. It is not just the differences in our ages nor is it our gender or sexual prefrences that divide us. I believe that it is our lack of common mentality about ourselves.
During my childhood there was a mantra that I heard everywhere. You are a member of the race. That wasn't just an empty slogan that was tossed about. It was our foundation for growth and development. Our elders not only told us this frequently, they also gave us instructions, expectations and goals that would fulfill the meaning of that statement. We were taught that being proud of who we were was one weapon in our arsenal.
Loving ourselves was the greatest force that we had to combat all the assaults hurled our way.
We addressed each other as family. Sister and Brother were common terms of respect that were used. Did we forget that once our elders stepped outside of our respective communities they did not receive the same from other people? When did we decide that we were no longer worthy of politeness and thoughtfulness? If we don't give it to each other-why do we spend so much time demanding that everyone else has to?
If they take time to observe our interactions-do you think they see the need to do so? I have to question this every day that I step outside of my home.
And what about our elders? Why should they have to fear the very people that they helped to liberate? They are the ones we needed to do battle for us. Now that they are nearing the end of their days and time-why should they be fearful of anyone who is Black just like they are?
I know that our folks don't like it when the probe turns our way. It always seems easier to blame someone or something other than ourselves.
We are at an important juncture in our story. We have got to make some life changing decisions. I sincerely believe that if we do not make a major effort to turn ourselves around-we are going to pay an even bigger price in the future for our lack of action.
Can we afford to do that? I don't see how we can continue to divide ourselves without considering that we need each other.
I hope and pray that as we move on into the days that lie ahead, that we take time to seek wise counsel. I also hope and pray that we get with our spiritual kinspeople, Wisdom and Knowledge. Because if we ever needed their guidance this is certainly the time.
Be blessed this week. Remember to send up prayers for yourself, your loved ones and for this nation. We need the Blessings of God to pour down on us.
