REMEMBERING MICHAEL JACKSON

I came in from spending a couple of hours in my garden and turned on my television. It was time for me to get my daily dose of political news and perspectives from the nightly talking heads.  I was not prepared for the breaking headline news.

When I first learned that Michael Jackson was dead it did not register within my thoughts right away.  How could this announcement be possible?  As I looked at the crowd gathered outside of UCLA Medical Center and listened to Keith Oberlmann give the up to the moment details of events that lead up to Michael's death, my mind was racing backwards.

Like many Black Baby Boomers, I was a teenager when the Jackson 5 hit the music scene.  That was back in 1969.  It was love from the beginning. These brothers could sing.  Especially the younger brother named Michael.  He was definitely a major talent in my mind.  Even though his older brothers were the stuff of our teenage fantasies.

I cannot think of time when Michael Jackson's songs have not been a part of my life as a teen or adult.  He was always in the rotation of albums that got played in our home, parties or wherever we were.

Granted his life did take some major unexpected turns.  But those turns never kept my original perspective of Michael's talent as an entertainer.  He was definitely a talented individual.  That is an aspect of Michael that cannot be denied.

I'm just glad I didn't think he was walking around like Elvis and Tupac. I knew it was final when I heard it. That's what hurts the most.
